Tips on How to Measure Your Social Media ROI November 25, 2009

How Should We Analyze the Results of Social Media Marketing?

As a business owner, you need to know all about your ROI. In other words, what returns are you getting for any investment that you make in the business? A higher ROI means higher profits and a more successful business. As we start to direct our attention to social media marketing, we have to find new ways to analyze our ROI. We need to determine what our options are for analyzing the success of our social media marketing campaigns and which of those options is most useful to us in our line of work.

The tough thing about analyzing the results of social media marketing is that there’s no set way that “the experts” agree on as to how to do this. Social media is still so new that we are still trying to figure things out as we go along. However, here are some tips that you can follow to start gaining a handle on analyzing the ROI of your social media work:

  • Determine what it is that you want to measure. You can measure the success of your social media marketing based on a number of things including website traffic, website page rank, increase in sales, amount of interaction you have with customers or how your business’s reputation appears online.
  • Assess the best method of measuring what you want to know. Once you’ve determined what you want to measure then it’s a lot easier to track that information. Of course, it’s easier for some things than for others. It’s fairly simple to tell if your website traffic has increased using simple online analytics tools to do so. It’s not quite as easy to determine what your business’s online reputation is. However, even the more difficult areas can be measured. For example, you can keep track of the positive vs. negative statements about your business on Twitter.
  • Find the right tools. There are many tools on the market today (ranging from free to pricey) which are designed specifically to offer you information about your website analytics. Some of these may be helpful to you in assessing your goals. Do your research into the available analytics programs and find one or two that seem to be a good fit for you. You may also consider hiring SEO professionals to assist you with your analysis.
  • Create a step-by-step plan for tracking your progress. You want to get down on paper how you plan to use these tools to measure what you want to know. Write down a series of simple steps for tracking your progress. Include your goals. For example, if your goal is to increase website traffic then your steps might include using a tool to check existing traffic, setting a goal to increase that traffic by 25% over a three-month-period, focusing your efforts on a specific area of social media like Twitter, checking in monthly to see if you’re progressing towards your goal, and tweaking your social media campaigns monthly to improve your progress.

There is no perfect way to determine your social media ROI but there are a lot of options out there which you can play around with to get a good idea of how well you’re doing with your social media marketing. Don’t be afraid to try new tools and methods to make the analysis of your efforts easier for you.
