Step 1 in the MashaFragrance.com SEO Extreme Makeover April 9, 2009
So work has officially begun. I wanted to get a post out to all of your that are starting to follow our progress on this project. Well let’s dig into our SEO case study. I met with Jackie last week over lunch and discussed the site’s history, ups and downs, and what her goals are. Then came the part I look forward to the most how to beat the competition!! Here we come perfume.com!
I am going to break this post out into the following pieces so I can explain the issues and how we are going to tackle them!
1) Keywords - As many of your know keyword research is a very important first step. This steps lets us “SEOers” know what people are typing into Google when they are looking for your products! However keep in mind that not all keyword tools are created equal and never “ASSUME” you know what people are actually looking for, do your homework! When we did our research we found that searches for perfume, men’s cologne and women’s cologne had much more search traffic than fragrance. So one of our first orders of business is to start targeting these new phrases everywhere we can in content and meta tags.
2) Unique Content -I can not say how important it is to have unique content on your site. I also find that e commerce sites are often VERY guilty of not putting in the effort to create unique content. One of our challenges here will be to find, create and edit enough content about every category, manufacturer and product to set MashaFragrance apart in google’s eyes from other perfume retailers selling the same products. We will start with unique SEO tags and hand written content. We will also try to solicit some product testimonials, which would help greatly. I will be relying heavily on our seo content writers to help us through this one!!
3) Inbound Links - It will take us 2-3 weeks to get enough products, categories and custom meta tags written to worry about links but it is an inevitable step! Google values links so highly now that we can never beat perfume.com without them! Some of you may have heard of PageRank, in the simplest terms this is Google’s measure of how many sites link to yours. This now weighs heavier that ever on google’s results pages. We will write custom articles about perfume and cologne with links into the site as well as list the site in appropriate directories to help build up page rank. Our social media staff will be taking care of these steps for us as they are highly trained in positioning our customers in the social community. They will make sure that MashaFragrance is listed in Digg, Twitter, Facebook…. so on!
Ok now we are on to the actual work! I will have another update for you in the next 2-3 weeks! By then we should be on to the social marketing side of things and will have an update for you on our content creation!
