Get Indexed / Spidered by Mobile Search Engines
When you take a look at the Internet on your mobile phone, it probably looks a lot like the regular web these days. Now that we’re using touchscreen smartphones like the iPhone and the BlackBerry Storm, our mobile web experience as users is very similar to what it is when we use laptops to access the web. However, the behind-the-scenes side of the mobile web is still a bit different from what you see on a desktop or laptop computer. Most websites still offer a mobile-friendly version of their pages that considers the bandwidth limitations of the average mobile phone. This means that it remains important to make sure that your website is getting indexed not only by the major search engines that people are using to access the mobile web but also that you’re getting spidered by mobile search engines.
Mobile search engines aren’t something that most people pay a lot of attention to when it comes to getting attention and traffic to their websites. People just don’t realize the importance of getting indexed on mobile search engines. This means good news for you because it translates to less competition from other sites when you get indexed on mobile search engines. This means that people who utilize mobile search engines to find information on their mobile web are people who are going to have an increased likelihood of coming to your website once you’ve learned how to get indexed and spidered by those search engines.
The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that your website is ready for getting indexed and spidered. Hopefully you’ve already done this but if not then now is the time to focus on that. You simply need to make sure that you have a high quality website that is updated regularly and that gets incoming links from at least a few other sites. These are the things that you would look at before submitting to any search engine and it’s true before submitting your URL to mobile search engines as well. The other thing that you need to do is make sure that you’ve made your site mobile-friendly. This means that you need to keep all titles short and simplify your URL structure. The best way to do this is to use any of the available conversion tools to convert the website to a mobile website.
Once you’ve done that then you need to let the mobile search engines know that you exist by heading to their websites and following their guidelines for submitting your URL to the site. Good ones to start with are Yahoo! Site Explorer and Google’s Mobile Sitemaps. When submitting, make sure that you follow all of the rules of submission to the T so that there aren’t any hold-ups in getting listed on the sites. Then just keep your website up-to-date and mobile-friendly and let the mobile search engines do their work. You won’t necessarily add a lot of new traffic to your site this way (although you may) but you’ll be making sure that you’re ahead of the competition when it comes to mobile search.
