The 3 Basic Types of Logos
Your business logo can be a great marketing tool if it is designed correctly. To choose a good business logo, you need to have an understanding of the different types of logos that are available to you. There are three core types of logos to choose from: font-based logos, abstract art logos and illustrative concept logos. It is typically the last type of logo that you would select for your business.
1. Font-Based Logos
The font-based logo is basically just the name of your business (or an acronym for your business). It is designed using an appealing and eye-catching font. IBM is one of the most well-known examples of this type of logo. Font-based logos are good for creating name recognition for your business. Their one drawback is that they don’t tell people a lot about what your business does. You can counteract this problem by including a short informative slogan underneath the main name in your logo design.
2. Abstract Art Logos
Another option is to choose an abstract art logo. This is essentially a random symbol that is designed to eventually be recognizable to people. It’s a tool that is used in branding a business. The most well-known example of this type of logo is the Nike Swoosh symbol which is a generic, meaningless symbol that has come to be widely associated with the Nike brand. This is a neat branding tool but it can be one of the toughest logos to gain benefits from especially when first starting out your business since it doesn’t provide customers with enough information about what your business is all about.
3. Illustrative Concept Logos
These are logos that also use artistic symbols but the symbols are specifically linked to what your business does. For example, a handyman business might use a logo that includes tools or a worker of some sort. This is the most useful type of logo for a business that is just starting out because it helps new customers to see what you can offer to them. A logo like this that also somehow incorporates the business name is a particularly good choice.
If you do some research into the different logos that businesses are using, you may be interested to find that a lot of businesses use abstract art logos even though this is often the most inefficient type of logo for marketing purposes. By working with a graphic designer or logo design service to create a great illustrative concept logo (or even a font-based logo with a slogan) you can put yourself ahead of the competition.
